1984 Review

1984 is a book written by George Orwell and published in 1949. The book follows Winston Smith. Winston Smith is worker for the Party. In this world, there are 3 countries: Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia. The book takes place in what used to be London which is part of Oceania. London has been ruined by the authoritarian Party. The Party uses propaganda and torture methods to control its citizens. Winston will try to rise up. But, will he liberate the oppressed people, or would he be forgotten as another dissident that disappeared.

Despite being slow at times, 1984 is still a good book. It makes you contemplate about the authoritarian societies that still exist today. It has become embedded in pop culture. 1984 is a book filled with complex characters that change. Winston goes from a quiet worker to a silent rebellious leader. It is terrifying to think of the control the Party and Big Brother had on the citizens. I would recommend this book if you want to think about society as a whole. However, I wouldn't recommend it if you want a nice fast paced book.

  1. Last year I tried to read this, but I couldn't get through it. I found the book too slow. However I also found the dystopian theme of the book to be very interesting and I wish I had the patience to read it. I like how your summary says enough about the book to give you a general understanding, but without spoiling anything.

  2. Hi Rishi, I really liked your review! I am kind of curious on what you through about Orwell's threads on how the past controls the future and the present controls the past, how the totalitarian governments use the war to maintain obedience within their borders and how Orwell manipulates the words to fit the agenda of the government that Winston lives in: War is peace, Freedom is slavery, Ignorance is strength. I also wonder what you thought about Winston's thoughts about how being mad doesn't necessitate to being wrong, and about concepts like doublethink and newspeak, and how, by limiting the number of words and grammar, it also limits the ability for the people to think critically about the world around them. I agree with your review; 1984 is quite the entertaining and interesting read, and I think that the slowness kind of adds an effect to it, a slowness that the people have when it comes to understanding the world around them.

  4. This is a good book review Rishi! It really lays out the basic theme and ideas of the book, but doesn't say too much. By saying your opinion on the book, you really put an idea into our heads of what to expect if we ever read this book in the future.
