A Review of Scythe by Neal Shusterman

If you're like me, you've probably wondered about what the future will be like, with the advancement of technology and how that could affect our lives. That question is often explored in futuristic dystopian novels, such as in Neal Shusterman's Scythe, a well-written journey into an interesting hypothetical future, with creative worldbuilding and plot.

Scythe takes place in an undetermined but far away time in the future. After humans achieved immortality in 2042, an evolved version of the cloud, called the Thunderhead, governs nearly every aspect of life, except death. Since people no longer die by natural causes and can be revived in the case of accidents, the Scythedom was created to regulate the population. The Scythedom is an organization of specially trained scythes who kill or 'glean' whomever they think deserves it.

The story starts when teens Citra and Rowan are recruited as Scythe Faraday's apprentices, where only one of them can become a Scythe and has to glean the other at the end of the apprenticeship. Meanwhile, rising tensions in the Scythedom and the death of Scythe Faraday cause Citra and Rowan to end up on opposing sides of the clashing scythe factions.

Scythe is the first novel in the Arc of a Scythe Trilogy, and though the other books are good, Scythe would have to be my favorite. While I did read this book a few years ago, I do remember liking it a lot, and the captivating story made it a hard book to put down. Scythe's unique dystopian plot and well-written characters make it a book that I would definitely recommend.

  1. Hi Chloe, I also read Scythe a while ago and only recently read the newer books. I agree that the plot was very interesting, but the later books were mediocre compared to the first one.
